Environmental sustainability and innovation in the building materials sector
GREENFOAM project is part of building materials sector with the focus of new technologies aimed at providing thermal insulation for residential and commercial buildings. To ensure high standards of thermal insulation, all buildings are insulated with large quantities of materials based on expanded polymers that, in according to the new stringent regulations and the technological progress, make new buildings increasingly eco-sustainable, allowing ever greater savings on costs for heating and cooling. The Expanded Polystyrene is the most used material for these applications, which is produced and marketed in two versions: EPS (Expanded Polystyrene) and XPS (Extruded Polystyrene).
With a view of an innovative and technological building, is important to garantee high safety standards in case of harmful events, for example, fires: EPS ed XPS materials have excellent thermal insulation performance but unfortunately they are not fireproof and, in order to obtain this property, it is necessary to mix them with Flame Retardant (FR) additives. Today the most widely used FR additives are polybrominated molecules (containing a high quantity of Bromine) that are extremely toxic, persistent in the environment and harmful. Despite this problem, polybrominated FR are very difficult to replace with less environmental impacting species because they guarantee high flame retardancy performances and have low costs.
In GREENOFOAM project, G.P.S. tech is going to develop a technology based on FR additives for XPS and EPS completely HALOGEN FREE (Non Halogenated Flame Retardant, NHFR), based on additives that also have the advantage of not migrating outside the material, going to limit the dispersion in the environment during the life of the products that contain them. Since polybrominated FR additives tend to degrade during the production of the foam board, limiting the recycling the products, the technology of GREENFOAM will also significantly improve the recyclability of expanded products, and the circular economy in builindg sector.
