Environmental sustainability and innovation in the building materials sector

The GREENFOAM Project is part of the construction chain with a focus on technologies aimed at providing thermal insulation to residential and commercial buildings.
To ensure high standards of thermal insulation, all buildings are insulated with large quantities of materials based on expanded polymers. Thanks to the introduction of new building regulations and continuous technological progress, new buildings are increasingly eco-sustainable, allowing savings increasing costs for heating and cooling.
The most used material today for these applications is Expanded Polystyrene, which is produced and marketed in two versions: EPS (Expanded Polystyrene) and XPS (Extruded Polystyrene).

EPS ed XP
EPS and XPS are materials with excellent performance for the thermal insulation, but these materials must guarantee high safety standards in case of harmful events such as, for example, fires. Unfortunately EPS and XPS are not fireproof and, to obtain this property, it is necessary to mix them with Flame Retardant (FR) additives: the most widely used FR additives today are polybrominated molecules (containing a high quantity of Bromine) extremely toxic, persistent in the environment and harmful. Despite the problems associated with them, polybrominated FR are very difficult to replace with less impacting species on an environmental level because they guarantee high flame retardancy performances and have relatively low costs.

GREENFOAM
In this field GREENOFOAM, is developing a technology based on FR additives for XPS and EPS completely HALOGEN FREE (Non Halogenated Flame Retardant, NHFR), based on additives that also have the advantage of not migrating outside the material, limiting the dispersion into the environment during the life of the products that contain them. Since the polybrominated FR additives tend to degrade easily during the production of the expanded panel, thus limiting the possibility of recycling the products, GREENFOAM technology will also significantly improve the recyclability of the foam products, paving the way for the implementation of circular economy linked to EPS and XPS used in construction.
